AFL junior finals - Extra Time + Golden Point - What to do with the Timer & Siren
The whole season has come to this!
A junior final has ended in a draw - Your competition could want "Extra Time", + maybe, a "golden point"!
The scorers have thrown their arms in the air - "What do I do with the scoreboard & siren???
Following is an extract from some local rules - with added advise on running the scoreboard timer + siren
(all competitions WILL vary - this guide is intended to assist with the timekeeping & siren).
- At the end of the fourth quarter, the goal umpires will meet to confirm a
tied score.
- Once a tied score is confirmed, extra time shall commence comprising of
two five-minute halves at each end. For the first half of extra time, teams
will kick toward the opposite end from what they did in the fourth quarter.
Set the countDOWN timer to 5 mins. Start the clock (siren will sound), at the end of 5 mins (the siren will sound automatically).
Reset the timer in prep for the next period. - At the completion of the first half of extra time, the goal umpires will meet
to confirm the scores. Teams will swap ends during this break in play for
the beginning of the second half. Repeat the process.
- At the completion of the second half of extra time, the goal umpires will
meet to confirm the scores and determine the winner.
If scores still remain
tied, teams will play another period until the first to score a
goal or behind and deemed the winner (golden point). A countDOWN timer will not work here. If you want to be meticulous then set a countUP timer for 20-30 minutes. Press Start and the timer will start counting up from zero & siren sound.
Timekeepers shall
immediately sound the manual siren following the ‘golden point’.
- Proceed with Celebrations or Commiserations.
This example will work for your club IF you have an automatic siren connected to the Solid software.
